Abstract

Objective: This article presents a five-step laparoscopic technique for manual morcellation using a U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-cleared double-wall tissue containment system (TCS) designed to enhance surgical safety, improve workflow efficiency, and seamlessly integrate into standard laparoscopic procedures. The system aims to reduce the risk of tissue spillage and potential cancer spread while maintaining procedural precision.

Methods: This technique demonstrates how the LapBox TCS integrates into minimally invasive procedures utilizing manual morcellation. Its dual-layer inflatable design maintains a safe distance between the scalpel and containment chamber, ensuring a clear surgical field and efficient tissue retrieval. The system features a delivery mechanism, allowing for efficient containment of larger tissue masses. A supplementary video demonstrates the morcellation process.

Results: The LapBox TCS enabled safe tissue containment while preserving the benefits of minimally invasive laparoscopic hysterectomy and myomectomy. Surgeons reported enhanced procedural confidence, clear visualization during morcellation, and controlled tissue retrieval. The technique was successfully integrated into standard laparoscopic workflows with a short learning curve and minimal modifications. The system maintained full containment throughout the procedure, even with high-volume tissue retrieval.

Conclusions: The LapBox TCS enables contained tissue extraction while supporting a manageable learning curve. Familiarity with the FDA-cleared LapBox system may enhance procedural safety in minimally invasive hysterectomy and myomectomy by improving tissue containment during morcellation and reducing the risk of unintended dispersion. By offering a compliant approach, the system is a valuable tool for surgeons and a scalable solution for institutions prioritizing surgical safety and regulatory compliance.
