Abstract

Contained tissue extraction is a critical component of minimally invasive gynecologic surgery, ensuring the safe removal of large specimens while minimizing the risk of tissue spillage.

The need for effective containment solutions has grown since the FDA issued a safety communication in 2014 discouraging electromechanical morcellation without containment due to the risk of occult malignancy dissemination.

To address this concern, many surgeons transitioned to manual morcellation techniques, which, when performed without an appropriate containment system, continue to pose a risk of unintended tissue spillage.

The LapBox, developed by Ark Surgical, represents an innovative advancement in contained tissue extraction technology. This clinical paper examines the design, functionality, and advantages of the LapBox, highlighting its double-walled containment system, air pressure inflated structure, and insertion applicator, all of which are designed to enhance patient safety while maintaining surgical efficiency.
